Why Do Some People Find Exercise Harder to Commit to Than Others

Anna Langridge from 1FitLife shares insights on what keeps us motivated to exercise over the long haul. Struggling to keep up with your fitness routine?

After the Christmas season, many of us aren’t thrilled with our fitness levels. Some jump right into fixing it, but for others, it’s a real challenge. Why is this?

The time of year doesn’t help, but it’s often about more than just timing—there are deeper reasons behind our behaviour that we should consider. I’m no psychologist, but I’m drawn to a simple idea called the ‘Behaviour Change Wheel.’

This concept breaks down three main things that help us change our habits:

Capability

We need to be ready both physically and mentally. You don’t have to start big. Maybe just walk, swim, or cycle for 30 minutes a couple of times a week. Gradually do a bit more each week to build up your fitness slowly but surely.

Motivation

Our drive to do healthy things needs to be stronger than our urge to do the opposite. Motivation can come from enjoying the benefits, like feeling fitter, or from wanting to avoid bad news at your next doctor’s visit. It’s usually easier to start this in January when we’re all a bit tired of holiday excess. But sticking with it can be tough—it helps to know what you’re doing. That’s why having a trainer or joining a group class can be great. They can help you figure out what you can do, keep things safe, and keep you on track.

Opportunity

Making changes is easier when you’ve got support. It helps to have friends and family cheering you on, a good place to exercise, and set times in your schedule. Tell your loved ones about your plans and maybe even find a buddy who’ll join you.

What can you do today? Write down these quick questions and keep them where you can see them every morning:

  • How badly do I want to change (1-10)?
  • What’s my favourite exercise right now?
  • What’s my fitness goal?
  • What’s one food change I can make tomorrow?
  • Who can I ask for help?
  • Who should I tell about my fitness plans?

Remember, changing habits is a marathon, not a sprint. Take it step by step, celebrate your progress, and good luck!
